Early in the design of Pitney Bowes' 14 Series high-speed insertion machine, engineers realized in order to provide customers with higher throughput than ever before possible--14,000 documents an hour--they faced a real challenge. They would need a clutch/brake solution that could perform significantly better than conventional electromagnetic technology. Utilities, banks, and other companies use these machines to fold, insert, and apply postage to customer statements.

May the force be with you.
Design News ; Your cover story (DN 5/17/99) on the new brake/clutch system for the Pitney Bowes mailing machine implies a large magnetic force dependence on distance. But, clearly, the effective distance for the old and new designs cannot be 0 and 0.25 mm, respectively, if there is an inverse- square distance
Feedback on speed: a novel process offers an inexpensive way to monitor the speed of small permanent-magnet motors.(Basics of design engineering--Motion Control)
Machine Design ; For many years control makers monitored servomotor velocity and rotor position through use of various built-in or attached devices. The last few decades have seen a mushrooming of applications for motors that incorporate velocity control. These new applications frequently need small and
A necessary evil: the air gap in rotating machines
Electrical Apparatus ; But it often gets overlooked when it should be getting close attention NOT TOO BIG, NOT TOO SMALL. THE ESSENtial air gap separating rotor from stator in any electric motor or generator has several important influences on machine performance-nevertheless, in any design discussion, few essential
Sensing the feedback: cost-effective sensor with velocity feedback provides solution for small motors.(Electrical/Electronic)
InMFG ; For many years it has been common to find various devices either built into or attached to servo motors that provide signals relating to the motor's velocity and/or rotor position. During the last couple of decades, many more applications for motors that require control of the motor's velocity have
Lateral hip air gap technique
Synergy ; Tim Barrall, Senior I Radiographer, the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, describes a technique that is effective in reducing patient dose and improving ease of acquisition. When imaging the ball and socket joint of the upper limb for the lateral supero-inferior shoulder (axial shoulder) or lateral
Heat flux through the timber walls under summer climate conditions in Eastern Europe.
Journal of Civil Engineering and Management ; Abstract. The systems of air cooling and conditioning become more and more popular in Lithuania because of the reduced costs of equipment and installation. The popularity of the lightweight, heterogeneous and low thermal inertia envelops of buildings is increasing as well. Thus, there is a great
Magnetic stability: Key to avoiding rotor rubs
Electrical Apparatus ; Although an even air gap is impossible to maintain, contact between rotor and stator can be minimized REBALANCE IT ALL YOU want-no electric motor will ever exhibit zero vibration. Perfection can't be expected. Similarly, no matter how accurate the machining, no motor can ever be assembled with a
"AIR GAP" SENSOR PROVIDES DATA TO HELP AVOID COLLISIONS
Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society ; Air Gap, a bridge-clearance sensor, will assist mariners in avoiding collisions with bridges by providing real-time data on the distance between bridges and the water's surface. The product is a new addition to NOAA's Physical Oceanographic Real-Time System (PORTS) program. PORTS supports safe,
Air gap keeps water flowing from dishwasher
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel ; Ask The Contractor Air gap keeps water flowing from dishwasher Sunday, August 6, 2000 Q: When adding an automatic dishwasher to the home, why is it necessary to have one extra hole in the sink? A: The additional hole in the top of the sink leaves room to install an air gap, which prevents any water
