Margot Heinemann's basic assertion that Thomas Middleton was sympathetic to Puritanism in the book Puritanism and Theatre: Thomas Middleton and Opposition Drama under the Early Starts, is challenged by the numerous references to Puritans that are contemptuous in tone. It is likely that Heinemann expanded various pieces of evidence, forming them into sweeping assertions.
