Severe Weather Conditions Devastate Guatemalan Cardamom.(Statistical Data Included)

THE MAJOR CARDAMOM harvest that began in Guatemala last October has been severely weakened by the weather. A year-long drought stunted that nation's cardamom plants, and Hurricane Mitch, which hit Guatemala in late September, devastated what was left of the crop. Supply of cardamom oil is tight, and traders expect it to get progressively harder to obtain.

The first cardamom seed harvest, one of three throughout the year, usually yields half of the annual crop. Last year, Guatemala's cardamom crop was about 18,000 tons. This year, the country's harvest is expected to ...
