The poultry industry in Texas generates more than a million tons of poultry litter - manure and bedding - each year. A major problem for producers is disposing of the litter.

Poultry litter should be considered a valuable resource which, when managed properly, can reduce the need for commercial fertilizer. Litter applications to soil can add organic matter to improve water holding capacity and soil tilth. Animal waste can provide an economical source of nitrogen (N), phosphorus and potassium.
