A simmering dispute between the Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and Woods Hole Steamship Authority and the city of New Bedford over freight shipping flared up yesterday, as a Steamship Authority marketing director said she was fired for blowing the whistle on the boat line.
Debbie Hughes said she lost her job Monday because she disclosed potentially unlawful Steamship Authority practices that restricted trade to an exclusive group of 99 shippers, the Associated Press reported. Hughes also said the Authority blocked New Bedford's efforts to run freighters out of its port.
