James J. Lawless Jr. of Weymouth, a naval fire control engineer, died Saturday at South Shore Hospital after a brief illness. He was 74.

Born in Boston, he was raised and educated in Jamaica Plain. He was a resident of Weymouth for the past 44 years.

During World War II, he served in the Navy as a seaman first class.
