NEW YORK - For those who consider Egyptian art to be only monumental pyramids and inscrutable sphinxes, think again.

Much has clouded our view of this once mighty civilization. "Egyptomania," or the craze for things Egyptian, did not help further understanding of the genius of the art.

Now, three major exhibitions of Egyptian art lift the veil of romanticism surrounding Egypt and show treasures embodying the civilization's most cherished beliefs.

The exhibits are "Splendors of Ancient Egypt," at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond through Nov. 28; ...
