MARKING UNIVERSALS AND THE STRUCTURE AND EVOLUTION OF KINSHIP TERMINOLOGIES: EVIDENCE FROM SALISH.

The purpose of this article is to show how marking rules, as formulated in Greenberg's cognitive-linguistic theory of kinship universals, account for asymmetries in the structure and evolution of kinship terminologies. The evidence is based on Elmendorf's comparative study of fourteen terminologies from the Salish language family in northwestern North America.
