In 1931, A.A. Cense was appointed as State Linguist for South Celebes. Over the next ten years, he oversaw the production of numerous publications relating to the language, customary laws and general ethnology of the area. One of the most stimulating of these publications was the text under review, Chabot's doctoral dissertation Verwantschap, Stand en Sexe in Zuid-Celebes, originally published in 1950 and now appearing in English as Kinship, Status and Gender in South Celebes. ...
