Sculptor Tilman Riemenschneider created intensely religious figures in Wurzburg, Germany, between 1483 and 1531.

A late medieval sculptor, his work anticipated that of the baroque Italian painter Annibale Carracci, who lived a century later and also has an exhibit in the West Building of the National Gallery of Art through Jan. 9.
