More achievers say `No, thanks' to Phi Beta Kappa: Anti-elitist trend prompts head-scratching.(A)

Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society, is questioning its relevance in a society that increasingly scorns the notion of academic excellence.

A period of introspection has followed reports that on many big university campuses a growing number of high-achieving students who are selected to join Phi Beta Kappa decline the invitation to accept the historically prized gold key that symbolizes achievement in the liberal arts and sciences.

Critics of academe aren't surprised.
