`Good-news area' ignored, says U.S. general in Latin America.(World)

The commander of U.S. troops in Latin America is decidedly upbeat about the region but said yesterday that American businessmen and politicians are woefully uninformed about the area.

"This part of the world is moving in a positive direction. It is not without injustice, racism and massive levels of violence, but there are no nuclear, chemical or biological weapons," said Gen. Barry McCaffrey, commander in chief of the U.S. Southern Command. "This is the good-news area of the world."

But the general said the American public is better informed about Europe and Asia ...
