Biologist's biologist touts saving species: Darwinian Mayr lists theories in book.(Science/Health)

BOSTON - Ernst Mayr, the naturalist who helped define species for modern biology, doesn't worry about such details when it comes to preserving creatures like the Florida panther.

This panther is not a species, but only the Florida version of a mountain lion.

"Even if the Florida panther is not a separate species, even if it isn't even a separate subspecies, we should protect it," Mr. Mayr said. "It's an interesting local population of a spectacular kind of organism, and the people of Florida are very proud to have him."
