Only one active Confederate general ranked ahead of Robert E. Lee in standing early in the Civil War - Albert Sidney Johnston. The seniority list placed Johnston behind the aged Samuel Cooper (West Point Class of 1815) and ahead of Lee.

Had his promising career not been cut short, he might have been a significant factor in the Civil War.
