The Corcoran Gallery of Art's Ernest Flagg exhibit features a 2-foot-square hole dug into the wall. It's been artfully dug, of course, and neatly framed, but it goes all the way back to the structural brick - a good 4 inches - to expose a total of 13 layers of paint, plaster, lath and wood.
As the excavation reveals the construction of the wall, so the exhibit, now on view through Oct. 19, reveals the larger story of the construction of the original museum. Drawings ...
