Too bad "BeaumarchaisL'Insolent" ("Beaumarchais, the Scoundrel") fails as an irresistible film of biography and history - especially since the French costume romp is the last new picture playing at the Key, which closes Dec. 7.

Great prospects for such a film masterpiece probably vanished when the late, great Sacha Guitry failed to develop the source material, an unpublished play, into a theatrical and movie vehicle for himself.

Presumably, that was an opportunity lost sometime in the the 1930s.
