It was early February 1863, and Union Rear Adm. David Dixon Porter had a problem. Standing on the deck of his flagship, the USS Benton, Porter looked out at his flotilla of gunboats and ironclads anchored far up the Mississippi River above Vicksburg. Vicksburg was the problem.
The Union military's plan to seize the river and effectively cut the Confederacy in half was well-conceived. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had taken the area around Vicksburg, but Confederate Gen. John C. Pemberton, in command of the city, was stubbornly resisting.
