Descendants of Dr. Samuel A. Mudd rejoiced yesterday in a federal judge's ruling that the Army must reconsider the 1865 conviction of the Maryland physician as a co-conspirator in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.

"I've been working on this for 79 years and have appealed to every president" for relief, said the legendary physician's grandson, Dr. Richard Dyer Mudd of Saginaw, Mich. "This is wonderful."
