Butanediol (bdo) processes using cheap and readily-available feedstocks, especially butane, have eased the entry of new BDO players such as Sisas and BP Amoco. Producers including DuPont and BASF have also used the technologies for capacity expansions in place of Reppe, the acetylene- based route that has dominated BDO production since the 1930s.

Butane-based production has forced Reppe users to become more efficient. ISP shut its high-cost Calvert City, KY plant early this year, but industry experts say that most Reppe plants will survive. Greenfield Reppe ...
