Amniocentesis, usually performed at 16 weeks gestation, recently has been performed at 11 to 14 weeks as an alternative to chorionic villus sampling (CVS). Early amniocentesis lets patients know results sooner, and the technique is familiar to more obstetricians than is CVS. But there is evidence that it is less safe than second-trimester amniocentesis.
