Brother Bartholomew Varden, C.F.X., died Saturday at Xaverian Brothers' Retirement Home in Danvers. He was 88.
Born Matthew A. Varden in Elmira, N.Y., Brother Bartholomew joined the Xaverian Brothers in 1929. He graduated from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., in 1933.
Brother Bartholomew's first assignment was teaching religion, math and science at Saint Xavier in Louisville, Ky. His next assignment was at Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore. He was appointed director of Xaverian College, the Scholasticate, Silver Spring, Md., in 1941 and ...
