We've all seen the stories, read the headlines, heard the reports: Vegetarianism is going mainstream. Each season brings a new shelf full of vegetarian cookbooks; every restaurant seems to offer vegetarian options. Vegetarianism, it seems, is as American - and as average - as apple pie.

Or is it? If the number of support groups and organizations a particular movement spawns is inversely proportional to its mainstream acceptance, then vegetarianism has a long way to go.
