For much of its 58-year history, American Ballet Theatre has been an anomaly. Though it is one of the world's leading ballet companies, it has never had a theater to call home, but performs instead as a touring company, which has made it difficult to develop a broad base of financial support. And in 1984, during the middle of Mikhail Baryshnikov's 10-year reign as artistic director, the company nearly went bankrupt.
