Q: My cousins are all crooks, so I spend a lot of time sitting in courtrooms. The other day, during a particularly boring closing argument, I spotted the judge's gavel and got to wondering about how that custom got started. When and where did judges begin using gavels?

A: The first published reference to judicial use of a gavel occurred in England in 1860. The custom seems to have crossed the Atlantic quickly. An 1875 etching in the New York Daily Graphic newspaper shows a judge presiding over an important trial with gavel in hand.
