A fine-arts institution in a town known for boxers, Brockton's Fuller Museum has been on the ropes before.

In the early '90s, the cash-strapped museum drew national criticism when it sold works from the permanent collection to balance the budget.

But the Fuller has never had to pick itself up after a tragedy such as this one.

When Caroline Graboys joined the museum as director in 1991, she rapidly put it back in the black with staffing and program cuts. But the museum's comeback from its mid-'80s heyday was still a work in progress in February, when Graboys, 52, died ...
