Colt's Manufacturing Co. made the gun that won the West, but the threat of courtroom showdowns has run the Connecticut company largely out of the consumer handgun market.

Colt's decision to high-tail it had Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino crowing last night. He said Colt's has finally realized it's responsible for making weapons that maim people.

"The lawsuits would bankrupt them," Menino said. "They can make a safe gun. ... You have more warnings before you buy a cup of coffee than you do before buying a handgun."
