   These days I close my eyes at the salon 
   to feel the hairdresser's talons rake my scalp. 
   Always longing for a benediction, 
   the laying on of hands. 
 
   They used to say retarded children 
   had been touched by God. 
   The slack-mouthed son of the bus-driver 
   followed his mother up the town 
   meekly carrying her shopping basket. 
   His vacant drooling terrified me. 
   A bit touched, they'd say, with a wink 
   and a tip of the finger against a frontal lobe.
