The commentary "Butterflies bearing grenades" (The Washington Times, Sept. 20) discussed two scientific papers about genetically engineered crops that appeared recently in the international journal Nature.

Along with other scientists from the University of Arizona and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, we wrote one of the papers. We respond here to clarify and increase awareness of the advantages and limitations of genetically engineered crops.
