The seasonal dynamics of plant N assimilation and microbial N immobilization were studied in an alpine ecosystem to evaluate temporal patterns of plant and microbial N partitioning and the potential for plant vs. microbial competition for N. Plant N uptake was higher in the first half of the growing season than later in the season, as indicated by changes in biomass N and by 15N uptake. Microbial N pools were low during the first half of the growing season (9.5 g N/[m.sup.2] on 1 June) and ...

SEASONAL PARTITIONING OF NITROGEN BY PLANTS AND SOIL MICROORGANISMS IN AN ALPINE ECOSYSTEM.
Ecology ; INTRODUCTION The assimilation of inorganic nitrogen into plant and soil microbial biomass is essential for the maintenance of fertility and productivity in terrestrial ecosystems. Nitrogen is the element most likely to limit productivity in natural ecosystems (Vitousek and Howarth 1991). There is

Rocky Mountain News ; The dominoes are tumbling one by one, and the end point will be dead fish and dead trees in Colorado's high country, according to University of Colorado biogeochemist Mark Williams. "The wilderness is not going to fall apart in the next year, but we're kicking over the first dominoes now," said
