BALTIMORE _ As soon as Jane Goodall slipped into the lecture tent at the Baltimore Book Festival, the overflow crowd was on its feet in sustained applause.

Goodall waited at the lectern, a slight figure, smiling quietly. Then, tilting back, she puckered her familiar face and returned the greeting _ with a robust chimpanzee pant-hoot. It was the ``distance call'' of the Gombe chimps.

Gombe is the Tanzanian refuge where Goodall set up a field station in 1960 and conducted years of groundbreaking, high-profile research into the complexities of chimp society. Out of that grew ...
