This excellent book is the first full-length feminist study of Shakespeare's Roman plays. It offers 'a critique of the ideology of gender on which the Renaissance understanding of Rome was based' (p. 1). The publishers announce the volume as bringing a 'startling critical perspective': happily, it does no such thing, being more scholarly and valuable than those words ...
