It is argued that metamorphosis and distortion play a significant role in Marcel Proust's 'A la recherche du temps perdu'. The significant identity changes portrayed in the early part of the novel as the narrator passes between dreams and consciousness, have long attracted attention. Proust's work is analysed in depth to demonstrate the role of distortion and metamorphosis.
