Basil Bunting's 'Briggflatts' portrays the development of consciousness, portraying life from infancy to old age. The work, which was written in 1966, is subtitled 'An Autobiography' and is paralleled in spirit to the works of Wordsworth and Eliot. The influence of Bunting's Quaker upbringing and education in his works and 'Briggflatts' in particular is analysed.
