Considering that extant records of winemaking in Alsace lead back to the sixth century Merovingian era, California's wine makers have honed their craft damn speedily. And while California Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot gris, Muscat, and Pinot blanc are largely overshadowed in this land of Chardonnay zealots, alternative white varietals available from Alsace also remain overlooked by Americans.
