LOSS OF HABITAT LEADS TO DECLINE
Nature provides a wide range of survival challenges for turtles: carnivorous predators, egg-robbing thieves, parasites and disease. But in New York State, nothing is more deadly to the chelonian species than humans.
As the name indicates, the bog turtle (Clemmys muhlenbergii) thrives in those soggy, spongy areas that humans have been so anxious to fill in, pave over or drain. Add to that road kills, illegal collection as pets, poisoning from pesticide and chemical runoff, and the toll of human activity climbs.
