The new atomic-fountain clock will displace the currently used thermal-beam atomic clocks in maintaining accurate timekeeping. Ultracold atoms are tossed upward by the new instruments and they fall under the influence of gravity. Performance of atomic clocks is improved by chilling atoms because cold atoms move more slowly. It is possible then to more precisely monitor their response to microwaves.
