Aug. 23 -- IRVINE, Calif. -- Mohamad Saadoun speaks passionately of Arabic literature, his words rolling over themselves as he describes classical and medieval works, books on Islamic law and current affairs in the Middle East, even cookbooks.

"Arabic literature is the vastest in volumes in the world," Saadoun said. "There are 15 million classical manuscripts. Some titles have as many as 100 volumes."
