EU Bans Chrysotile Asbestos Amid Debate on its Safety.

Despite disagreement over whether chrysotile asbestos (white asbestos) posing serious health risks, the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) banned the product in a July 26 directive.

Outlining points in a treaty regarding the ultimate ban of all asbestos products, the CEC cited supporting positions by scientific and medical research that is still developing with regard to chrysotile dangers.

It has directed its Scientific Committee on Toxicity, Ecotoxicity and the Environment to review relevant new data on chrysotile asbestos and its substitutes ...
