DM&E is preparing to upgrade for heavy-haul traffic and construct a new line into the Wyoming coal fields over one of railroading's most difficult subgrades.
The Chicago & North Western used to bring in an awful lot of revenue hauling bentonite clay from western South Dakota and eastern Wyoming. Unfortunately, that same underlying adsorbing clay and other equally challenging soil materials caused terrific drainage problems all along the way.
