The effects of pathological gambling on family and society are varied since the behavior disrupts personal, family or vocational pursuits. Adverse life events such as higher divorce rates, excessive debt, employment termination, alcoholism, drug dependence and bankruptcy have been known to result from pathological gambling. To address this problem, the University of Memphis' Center for Problem Gambling is involved in the research and the treatment of pathological gambling.
