The concept of "otherness" has become so fashionable that its very popularity threatens the authenticity of the multicultural pursuit. Such popularity can lead one to wonder, alongside Wayne Booth, "whether some of its defenders don't have in mind something quite un-other, something quite thoroughly tamed to perform tricks for modernist lion tamers" (72).
