As a result of low metal prices and the consequent decrease in mineral exploration budgets, there was a significant decline in the 1998 level of geophysical activity worldwide. In some parts of the world only federal and state government tenders were keeping the airborne survey industry, alive. However, international exploration budgets were still about $3.5 billion, much of which was invested in Chile, Argentina, Peru, Brazil and Mexico.
