To understand the language of drama in the eighteenth century it is important to consider both verbal and non-verbal communication. Gesture is more liberally interpreted than language. Schiller's early style is often described in terms of Pathos without considering its variety and poetic strengths. Language and gesture in Die Rauber is examined, with regard to the close connections between the verbal and non-verbal aspects of communication in the play.
