Author Bei Dao's poem 'Theme Song' depicts the situation of exiled Chinese writers who are outsiders in their host country. Written in the first person singular, the poem depicts the identity crisis of the author himself. The poem relates the position of exiled poets who become perpetual recipients of handouts by hosts who have never welcomed him as a member of the family. It portrays the money problems experienced by all exiles and, ultimately Dao's resignation in being rejected by his own nation years later.
