`Gem' spring oat (Avena sativa L.) (Reg. no. CV-358, PI 596804) was developed by workers in the Department of Agronomy, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and was released in March 1996. The parentage of Gem is MO0768/6/`Holden'/Irr.4/`Garland'/2/6[chi] amphiploid/2* CIav 6936/3/Garland/5/`Froker'/7/`Ogle'. The final cross, X6051/ Ogle, was made in 1984 in the field.
