NEW YORK-Direct-mail retailers have been quick to realize the potential in home furnishings in general and area rugs in particular.

From great Middle America catalogs like J.C. Penney and Spiegel to sophisticated upscale offerings like Williamsburg, catalogs are broadening their rug offerings to appeal to more consumers.
