The fall of the Suharto regime in Indonesia gave hope of independence to the people of East Tmor, and a referendum under the supervision of the United Nations was scheduled. However, as time for the referendum approaches, militias, reportedly trained by the Indonesian army, have initiated widespread terrorism and violence in East Timor.
