FRIEDRICH VON FLOTOW

Friedrich von Flotow (FLOH'-toh) was born in Teutendorf, in the German state of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, on this day in 1812.

Flotow was rich, and his family sent him to Paris to study to be a diplomat. Instead he was drawn to the musical scene and became a friend of Jacques Offenbach.

Flotow's reputation rests entirely on one work...a ballet which he later turned into an opera called ``Martha.''
