* Hattie McDaniel, actress, was born in Wichita, KS, on this day. McDaniel started her career as a singer, and she made her motion picture debut in 1931. She appeared in more than 300 films. She became the first Black honored with an Oscar by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for her performance in Gone With The Wind. Later she moved to radio on the Eddie Cantor and "Amos 'N Andy" shows. She also was the star of the "Beulah" show on radio and television.
