Listening to Milton Babbitt's electronic music: the medium and the message.(A Symposium in Honor of Milton Babbitt)

The distinctive qualities and possibilities of electronic music were thoroughly explored by American composer Milton Babbitt in his works for this medium. In 'Composition for Synthesizer,' he highlighted the synthesizer's capacity to blend musical elements such as register, timbre and pitch. In the piece 'Ensembles,' Babbitt displayed the capacity of electronic instruments to produce orchestrations of varying colors, gestures and phrasings. On the other hand, 'Reflections,' a piece for the piano and synthesized tape, exhibited multiple pitch couplings and resonances.
